This study explores the phenomenon of resilience among older adolescents in foster care. Non-white race was associated with higher resilience even after risk and protective factors were controlled.
These results indicate that the Youth Villages Transitional Living program can improve multiple outcomes for young adults with histories of foster care or juvenile justice custody, a notable finding given the paucity of documented positive effects for programs that serve these populations.
The overall study addresses three primary research questions: 1) Does extending foster care past age 18 influence youths’ outcomes during the transition to adulthood? 2) What factors influence the type support received during the transition to adulthood? 3) How do living arrangements and other services influence the relationship between extending care and youth outcomes?
