This paper is an overview of the elements that support foster youth as they enter and manage their education at the college level.
Arizonans for Children Inc., incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, exists to facilitate opportunities and provide effective solutions to alleviate hardships and improve the fragile lives of the abused, abandoned, and neglected children in foster care. They provide several services that help youth learn skills that will enable them to succeed in life.
In addition to basic needs like food and clothing, our residents are provided with counseling services, structured educational support, life skills training, financial literacy classes, civic engagement and other hands-on opportunities aimed at preparing these vulnerable youth for successful, independent living after foster care.
Whether it’s help with food, clothing, bus passes, and life skills training, we can help as you lay the foundation for future success. We can link you to a wide variety of resources including education, physical and mental health, legal assistance and more. We’ll connect you with a supportive mentor and invited to participate in ongoing social and relational opportunities.
Our youth-centered academic program, Graduation Success, helps youth in foster care engage and invest in their education and future. The Graduation Success program currently serves middle and high school students in foster care in King County and high school students in foster care in school districts in Pierce, Spokane and Snohomish counties.
Temple University’s Employment Connections for Opportunity Youth (ECOY) Program will serve 17-21 year old youth who have aged or are currently aging out of Foster Care. ECOY provides a comprehensive approach to college and career connectedness that include opportunities to exploration career options and exposure to career/college pathways.
Results indicate that Michigan foster care alumni had similar or worse outcomes than their peers in other alumni studies, and significantly worse outcomes than their peers in the general population in the areas of mental health, substance dependence, and education.
